Pet Preparedness for storm
10/15/2024 (Permalink)
People often talk about making emergency preparedness plans and emergency kits for themselves and their families in the event of severe storms, but how much thought have you given to an emergency plan/kit for your pet? After all they’re part of the family so you’d never leave them behind, but how prepared are you to bring them along?
It’s important when you have pets to make sure that your emergency evacuation plans include places that are pet friendly. Many shelters and hotels do not offer accommodations for animals, so having a safe place to take your pets along with your family is crucial. You should also talk with friends or family to make sure that in the event that you can not evacuate with your pets someone is able to get them and care for them. Finally, you should get your pets microchipped. Keep this info up to date with correct addresses and an emergency contact that is outside of your immediate home. Emergencies can be hectic, and accidents can happen where pets get away from you, but if they are microchipped the likelihood of them being returned home safely is greatly increased.
Once your plan is in place you should build an emergency kit for you pets. Just like for your family’s emergency kit it should include the basic items needed for survival in the event of an emergency:
- Several days’ worth of food and water stored in airtight (waterproof for food) containers
- Medicine/First Aid Kit – talk with your veterinarian to find out what is best for your pets’ personal emergency needs
- Extra collar, ID tag, leash/harness - this should also include copies of your pets’ registrations and other documents in a waterproof container and electronically
- Crates or carriers for each animal
- Grooming items and sanitation needs - emergencies can be messy and having a dirty pet is less than ideal, additionally this should include things like a litter box/litter if appropriate or plastic bags
- A picture of you and your pet together - this can help people to identify your pet should you be separated as well as help prove ownership if needed
- Familiar items – As stressful as emergencies can be for you and your family, they can be even more so for pets who don’t understand what’s going on. Having familiar items like toys or blankets can help make your pet feel safe and more relaxed
Your local SERVPRO knows that during storms being prepared is key and having a plan for everyone involved makes things that much easier. We hope that this little checklist can help you keep your pets safe should any emergencies arrive.
Tips for Home Owners During Storm

Storm Alerts
Storms can bring heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and other elements that can pose risks to your home and safety. Here are some essential tips for homeowners to stay safe and protect their property during a storm:
Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts through trusted sources like the National Weather Service or a weather app. Stay updated on storm developments and warnings in your area.
Create an Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essentials like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and essential medications. Keep it easily accessible.
Secure Outdoor Items: Secure or bring indoors any items that could become projectiles in high winds, such as patio furniture, gardening tools, and trash cans.
Trim Trees and Branches: Regularly trim trees and branches near your home. Weak or overhanging limbs can cause damage if they fall during a storm.
Check Gutters and Drains: Ensure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris to prevent water from accumulating and potentially causing roof or foundation damage.
Seal Windows and Doors: Check for drafts around windows and doors. Seal any gaps or cracks to prevent water from entering your home.
Turn Off Electronics: During a thunderstorm, power surges can damage electronics. Unplug sensitive equipment like computers and televisions or use surge protectors.
Have a Safe Shelter: Identify a safe shelter area in your home, preferably in the interior and away from windows. In case of severe weather, take refuge there with your family and pets.
Stay Away from Windows: If the storm intensifies, stay away from windows to avoid flying debris. Seek shelter in an interior room or basement.
Charge Devices: Ensure your mobile phones and other essential devices are fully charged in case of power outages.
Listen to Alerts: Pay attention to weather alerts and warnings. If authorities issue evacuation orders, follow them promptly.
Post-Storm Inspection: After the storm passes, inspect your property for damage. Check your roof, siding, and foundation for signs of water infiltration or structural issues. Take photos for insurance claims.
Beware of Flood Risks: Be cautious of flooding, especially if you live in a flood-prone area. Move to higher ground if flooding is imminent.
Assist Neighbors: Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly or those with special needs, to ensure their safety.
Remember, safety should be your top priority during a storm. Property can be repaired or replaced, but your well-being and that of your loved ones cannot. Staying informed and taking precautionary measures can help you weather the storm safely. Also, keep remember, SERVPRO is always here to help.

DIY Tips for After Storm Clean up?
7/29/2022 (Permalink)
Storm
Watching summer storms is fun and exciting when you're dry and safe at home, but clearing them can be a nightmare once the skies clear. With these four tips, you can beautify your home and garden in no time.
- Know what you're dealing with: Head outside and inspect your property after the storm has passed. Look for damage that requires immediate attention, such as a fallen power cord or a broken or leaking pipe. Record any damage you see, and be sure to take photos if you need to file an insurance claim.
- Pick up the broken parts: Once you've inspected your property, the real cleanup can begin. Start by picking up debris that has fallen in your yard and cleaning your gutters. Contact your local waste authority to find out if the additional collection is planned, when the collection will take place, and any special requirements.
- Check Your Plants and Flowers: Identify plants or flowers with broken stems. Remove damaged plant parts to prevent disease, but do not cut more than a third of the plant. Plants uprooted during a storm can be replanted. You do it fast, and the plant only needs moderate damage.
- Repair Your Trees: The first thing to do when you damage a tree on your property is to determine if it is safe to leave the tree. You should consult a professional for severe damage that can destabilize the tree.
Sometimes you cannot handle the damage caused by a storm on your own. If you live in North Arlington and are looking for professional Storm Restoration Services in North Arlington, you can count on SERVPRO professionals to help you recover.
Things Storm Restoration Pros Look for During Inspection?
4/12/2022 (Permalink)
Storm Warning
Your home's ability to rebuild after being damaged by bad weather depends on how accurately the danger signs are detected.
Because undetected issues cannot be properly resolved, the structural integrity of your property will not be fully restored if one or two causes for concern are not found.
To find problems, SERVPRO storm damage restoration experts always look for the following:
- Broken roof components: During a full external inspection, experts actively check for signs of wear such as loose shingles and damaged sheet metal parts.
- Gutter fault: Experienced storm damage specialists after storm damage fear clogged and loosened gutters and downspouts. Since gutter problems sooner or later cause water damage, they have the highest priority for inspection and repair.
- Wet spots on the ceiling: If the roof is leaking, the easiest way to find out in fair weather is in the attic. Water intrusion must have left traces of its existence. Dark streaks on ceilings and walls, damp insulation, damp values, ??and mold growth indicate a leak.
- Broken siding panels: Siding issues are always bad news, but a rift requires immediate attention. If left undetected and untested, they pave the way for water intrusion and are an open invitation to wildlife.
- Chipped windows: Storm damage repair experts look for paint damage. This is one of the most common consequences of constant exposure to moisture. While this is just a cosmetic issue, it can quickly become structural if water gets into the subfloor during bad weather.
SERVPRO can perform a thorough assessment of your home after a storm to uncover any issues. To schedule your inspection, contact SERVPRO’s Storm Restoration Experts in North Arlington.
